Long description

The Traditional Building Craft Skills Bursary Scheme provides funding to individuals who are interested in training for qualifications relating to the traditional crafts and built heritage sector. Bursaries are available to help individuals gain valuable work-based training, develop existing skills or improve their knowledge and experience of conservation and repair of historic buildings. The scheme aims to address some of the currently recognised skills shortages and gaps and to encourage more diversity in the industry. Placements will be offered at a range of public and private providers and will include specific heritage sites and workshops. Bursary holders will be supervised by experienced craftspeople. Placements can last from one month to two years.

Key criteria

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a craftsperson, trainee or individual interested in a career in the traditional crafts and built heritage sector.
  • Already have an NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in any discipline.
  • Have eligibility to work in England and Wales.
  • Have a UK bank or building society account into which the bursary can be paid.
  • Fulfill all requirements of the Trainee Specification.

  • Eligible trades include: blacksmithing; brick masonry; carpentry and joinery; electrical and plumbing; dry stone walling; earth building; fibrous plastering; flint working; ironwork; lime mortar; lime plaster; painting and decorating; stone conservation; roofing; wheel-wrighting.
  • The scheme will fund approximately 80 variable length work-placements.
  • The scheme is provided by English Heritage with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and support from The National Trust, Cadw, CITB-ConstructionSkills and the National Heritage Training Group.
